Not strictly a shade question, but we have quite a bit of the regular
purple-pink colored monarda that has just started blooming. We planted it
several years ago, having been assured that it was red. Last year when it
bloomed and we saw it was NOT red, we vowed to pull it up this year. Of
course we didn't get around to it, and now it is blooming again. One clump
is about 7/8 WHITE flowers and the other about 1/8 white flowers. The
white is definitely overpowering the pinky-purple.
I can see all kinds of ways this could have happened, but am wondering if
the purple could have sported to white for some reason. If not, what are
the possible explanations? Isn't white monarda kind of unusual? I don't
recall ever seeing or hearing of it. And it is WHITE WHITE, not yellowish
or grayish white. Same height, same size flower. Would appreciate any
input from Monarda fans.
