[SG] Kalmia latifolia

>According to the Sunset National
>Garden Book, none of them are hardy in areas that cold. Does anyone have
>any other information?

Hi, Sue. According to the "National Audubon Society Field Guide to North
American Wildflowers," K. latifolia naturally occurs from "New England and
New York south to Florida; west to Louisiana; north to Indiana." They
should have written 'north to Michigan', as I have seen them growing in the
wild near my home. Some areas of New England are in Z4a. Perhaps if you
use it as a foundation planting in a sheltered site, and give it a good
mulch in the winter, you can increase your chances of keeping the plant
alive. Using those methods, I have been able to grow many things hardy
'only' to zones 7 and 8 in my borders.
