Hi Karen,
I am growing A. tabularis on the southern edge of my main shade
garden. It is about 10 feet in from the drip line which is about
6-7 feet high. I'm growing it in a compost of 1 part pine bark
soil conditioner (about 3/8" diameter), 1 part composted mulch
(standard double ground) and two parts top soil. This is in a
hole about 3' in diameter and about 2' deep - this gives the
excess water somewhere to go. Mine survived 30" of rain in
4 1/2 months this year so I guess the drainage worked. I based
my culture on Jelitto and Schacht's recommendations in _Hardy
Herbaceous Perennials_ - expensive, but definitely worth it!
Here's what they say: "Cultivate like Rodgersia in semi-shade
in a cool, moist humous. Perfers to be planted under deep-rooted
trees, but also along water in semi-shade. Astilboides, however,
will not tolerate prolonged periods of flooding."
Mine hasn't bloomed yet, but two of my Rodgersia (R. pinnata and
R. sambucifolia) are blooming this year and I'm really looking
forward to seeing the rest of their cousins in bloom. Astilbes
on steroids!
Hope this helps,
John
