Hi Tim
This is just a quess because I have never had too many azaleas. Could
that be just what it is is some kind of a gall. Last year I found these
psychedelic looking growths on oak trees and opened them up and there
was a grub inside. It might be the trees reaction to a chemical inserted
by a wasp and the wasp has laid an egg in there somewhere. Like I said
this is just a wild quess.
