Nothing like a good discussion on a particular plant to get the adrenalin
pumping through the core of a gardener.
I grow several varieties of Cimicifuga, so in the wet and mud (we have had
rain for 40 days and nights), I checked my labels and took a few notes. I
make no allegations, nor do I pretend to know anymore about my plants than
what my books tell me, according to the varieties I think I'm growing. That
sentence may make sense only to me. The names I will list are the names that
came with the plants. My personal observations match the descriptions in my
reference material.
1. Cimicifuga racemosa - 7 yr. planting. Green stems/leaves. Pure white
bottle-brushes are presently in bloom on 5-6' plants.
2. C. ramosa atropurpurea - 4 yr. planting. Purple/green stems, new growth
is green with purplish cast to edges of leaves. Mature leaves are green. No
blooms are present but I do recall it normally blooms in October. 3-4' tall.
3. C. Hillside Black Beauty - 2 yr. planting. New growth on stems and leaves
is green, w/purplish cast to edges of leaves. Mature leaves and stems are
dark purple, (stunning). Plants have not bloomed for me; have my toes crossed
for this year. My fingers were taken along with cash for these plants, ). :)
