I'm also new to this list.  Seems I've found a good place for
miscellaneous information about my plants.  I'm just soaking it all up.

I'm also in Zone 9.  And the sunset numbers you keep hearing about are
the zones set up by Sunset (of the magazine fame) in their Sunset
Western Garden book.  This is the bible for gardeners in California
(along with a lot of other resources, of course).  Anyway, I understand
that Sunset was the first to develop the zone system, followed by the
USDA climate zones. Sunset breaks down the western US into 24 climate
zones.  It factors in winter minimus, summer highs, length of growing
season, humidity and rainfall patters to give an accurate picture of
what will grow where.
