Jean, I agree that botanical nomenclature is a frustrating subject,
especially with all the lumping and splitting going on. But it is vital if
we are to be able to communicate with each other and also to have
sufficient knowledge and background to grow our plants well. Hostas are
actually a good example of a genus where it's useful to know what species
are in the background, so you can provide the (approximate) growing
conditions they prefer. I certainly don't think that taxonomy is a
substitute for each one of us really LOOKING at each and every plant and
noticing its characteristics. That should come first and foremost. And we
should all try to scrabble around and come up with SOME botanical
self-education on our own, however informally we do it. But we have to put
up with the scientists, heaven help us--and them.
I look forward to seeing your nursery. It will probably be July 1.
