I doubt it, Lenora, not in Illinois. But, plants on the south sides of
houses, close to the foundation, can experience freeze - thaw conditions
detrimental to their well being that they wouldn't otherwise have due to
heat reflected off the house. Normally, this is a problem with woody
plants, particularly evergreen ones, not perennials. You also might be
afflicted with voles who rummage round just under ground and dote on Hosta
roots ...and there could be a bunch of other reasons, but I don't think
ambient temperature is the problem here.

Could it have been too warm there? Coupled with the fact that we had a
warm winter this year?
