Hi Lenora,
 We have no problem growing them in USDA zone 8 (zone 7 is 30 miles down
the road). It's more likely that you lost your hostas to 5+ different
reasons before I would suspect winter heat. Just MHO.

 FWIW, you may want to try a few inexpensive hostas for your mom. I think
somewhere there is a list of which ones do better in the south.
 So.Cal. has some pretty varied climates all lumped into one geographic
area. San Diego is probably out, but north or east of L.A. might work.
