            HOSTA RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SOUTHERN GARDENS
In response to the many requests of southern gardeners we have compiled a
short list of recommended hostas for the south.

*fortunei derivatives do great! *Late Blooming Hostas such as
Ellerbroek kikutti
Fort 'Albopicta longipies
Fort 'AureoMarginata' tardiflora
Fort 'Albomarginata'
Fort 'Obscura' *other misc hosta that do well
Fort ' Hyacinthina'
 Sum & Substance
Francee
     sieboldiis- ie Kabitan
Gold Standard
Tiara series- except they may look poor late into
Moonlight
the season the more shade and moisture you can
Night Before Christmas give them the better- except the extremes of course
Patriot (Golden Tiara, Grand Tiara, Platinum Tiara, Em-
Striptrease erald Tiara, Golden Scepter)
          Nigrescens
*plantaginea hybrids, except plantaginea, do Ventricosa and Ventricosa,
'Aureomargininata'
fine as they do not need as long of a dormancy,
one thing to warch for is they often emerge early Hostas that do not
perform well in the South
making them susceptable in the spring frosts. as they do
in the North.
Fragrant Blue
Fragrant Bouquet Tokudamas don't do as welll- they come up late and
Fried Bananas are affected by summer heat
Fried Green Tomatoes Tokuduma 'Aureonebulosa'
Guacamole Tokudama 'flavociricinalis'
Honeybells as an exception out of all the tokudamas Love Pat
Hoosier Harmony generally does fairly well, but never achieves the
Invincible size of those in the Northern states
Iron Gate Delight
So Sweet Krossa Regal is always a shorter plant
Sugar & Cream
Sweet Susan some sieboldianas if crossed with tokudamas are
Royal Standard very slow.
        Ie Abiqua Drinking Gourd
*Montana derivatives except montana If they crossed with a montana they do
better
'Aureomarginata' also emerge very early and are ie Blue Angel
susceptible to frost damange-but otherwise they do Big Daddy does as well
as any
well
Frosted Jade
montana 'Mountain Snow' Recommended cultural practice
montana kinkaku for better growth include:
So Stage Keep hosta cool in the afternoon, (shaded espe-
Yellow River cially in the afternoon) don't let the plants dry out,
        use supplemental watering.
