Re: [SG] [SG Tricyrtis or ToadLilies

I second the motion on the attractiveness of Triycrtis. Like Gene, we
collect these, and surprisingly there are quite a few out there to collect.
Yes, the white forms are really pretty. Tricyrtis hirta 'Alba' seems to be
the same as T. hirta 'White Towers' - pure white with a little yellow spot
at the base of each petal and purple anthers which give it that little
'something extra'. There is also another white one - Tricyrtis hirta
'Albescens', The flowers are a little smaller, and in the right light at
the right angle, you can see the palest yellow spots on the petals. The
anthers are yellow. It is nice too, but not quite as crisp looking.
There really is whole range of species and cultivars, some with bright
yellow flowers that hang like bells (T. macranthopsis and T. perfoliata),
and a dwarf one I particularly like - T. ohsumiensis - with close set, very
thick, almost waxy leaves on an upright plant about 10" tall, and 2" yellow
flowers that face up in the leaf axils. It's very cool. And I do love the
T. nana that Gene mentioned.

We are friends with a nurseryman who makes frequent trips to various parts
of the world, including Japan, and he has brought back some amazing new
Tricyrtis, including some new variegated forms and large flowered hybrids.
I expect they will start being available in the near future.
