Hibiscus moscheutos (that is the huge-flowered one sold just about
everywhere) is hardy in my area (Z 5/6). I have two plants, one grown in
dappled shade and the other in morning shade/afternoon sun. Both are doing
about the same: nice bloom every year, about 3' tall after 5 years. I
seldom give them any supplemental watering. This is the species from which
are derived the 'Southern Belle' and 'Disco Belle' cultivars, as well as
'Lord Baltimore', etc. They die back in winter and take a LONG time to come
up in spring. We had a very early spring here, and mine have just started
to send up strong shoots.

My favorite golden hosta for shade is the Aden cultivar, 'White Vision'.
Its heavy substance discourages slugs, too.
