I have never pruned my hydrangeas.   I don't think you are suppose to,
because they bloom on old growth.   I cut out the dead wood and
sometimes the end of the branch is dead and I'll trim that off.   I have
thought about pruning mine, but am not brave enough to try it.   afraid
it will ruin it.   that not to say you can't   maybe in you zone it's
the done thing.   maybe someone in you zone will make a comment.
