Kemberly,
I love Jap. maples and each year I order some from Forest Farm (they cost
about $14.95, so I can experiment without spending a fortune). My problem is
winter hardiness in zone 5. Some will survive, some won't. As far as
pruning, I try to do a bonsai thing, I have even used wires to train a couple
of small growers. The problem I'm having is that my pruning seems to end up
(at least this year) removing dead areas. I don't think they really need a
lot of pruning unless you're trying for a certain look. However, you will
get crisscrossed branches that will obviously need pruning.

A couple of weeks ago there was a discussion on the planting of Japanese
Maples. Well I've just planted my first of this lovely tree. I would like
to know if anyone has any pointers on the pruning of these wonderful trees.
