this post reminded me of an article on small maples in the April issue of MN
Horticulturist magazine. It listed Forest Farm as a source as well as
Arborvillage Farm Nursery in Hold, MO. Has anyone ordered from Arborvillage?
The article was written by Greg Morgenson in Bismarck, ND (USDA Zone 3). He
lists 6 kinds of small maples that he is growing successfully there.
1. Three-flowered Maple (Acer triflorum)
2. Manchurian Maple (A. mandshuricum)
3. Canyon or Big-tooth Maple (A.grandidentatum)
4. Rocky Mountain Maple (A. glabrum)
5. Mountain Maple (A. spicatum)
6. Korean Maple (A. pseudosieboldianum) This one I'm particularly
interested in as the article says "Gardeners with less-severe winters than
ours are able to choose from the seemingly unlimited number of cultivars and
forms of Japanese maple (A. japonicum). While none of these are hardy in our
area, a close relative, Korean maple, has done surpisingly well for me."
After describing this maple, Greg goes on to say "References indicate a
mature height of 15 to 25 feet, but I doubt this will be the case in our
area. Korean maple makes an excellent focal plant in small, protected bed
plantings, especially where shaded in the afternoon."
I'd love to hear of others opinions of these trees and how they used them.
Thanks,

p.s. I also learned a new word from this article MARCESCENT folliage. How
many know what this means without looking it up??? (I hope I'm not the only
one here :-)
(foliage retained throughout the winter months. the leaves are pushed off as
buds expand in spring)
