Hmmmm....Pat, that's a good one.  I have some lace caps and they bloom at a
fairly young age - from cuttings.  When you're pruning out the "dead" wood
in spring, wonder if some of it is not actually dead but simply old wood,
upon which the flower buds will form?   Old wood looks pretty dead until it
breaks dormancy.  Are you waiting until the plant has broken dormancy
before doing any pruning?

Are you, perhaps, feeding it too well with a lot of nitrogen?
