I have a neighbor with almost the exact situation. A few years ago they
planted hostas, Annabell hydrangeas, ferns, and azaleas under the entire
area. It looks beautiful and seems low maintenance, since they're not
gardeners and have young children. In St. Louis you would have a much larger
choice of azaleas and hydrangeas (if the soil is too heavy for the azaleas).
Does the soil get really dry? Could you improve it with mush. compost
first?
