The area does dry out more than some other areas of my yard that range
from rock hard clay to always damp. This area is not extraordinarily
bad, but could use substantial soil improvement. Azaleas do very well
here, as a matter of fact I've planted several in other areas of the
yard since I moved in about 9 months ago. I like the low maintenance
idea. This is sort of an out of the way area I don't frequent.
Thanks,

Denise,
I have a neighbor with almost the exact situation. A few years ago
they
planted hostas, Annabell hydrangeas, ferns, and azaleas under the
entire
area. It looks beautiful and seems low maintenance, since they're not
gardeners and have young children. In St. Louis you would have a much
larger
choice of azaleas and hydrangeas (if the soil is too heavy for the
azaleas).
Does the soil get really dry? Could you improve it with mush. compost
first?
