Hi Cindy--I have several Virginia Creepers , parthenocissus quinquefolia, growing up mature trees for 3 years with no noticeable negative effects. The leaves are not apparent until the fall when they turn a gorgeous red.
By the way, all you southerners with your spring plants in bloom, I don't have anything blooming yet but there are about 20 American Bald Eagles soaring around the area viewable from our front deck!!! This happens each year as the ice goes out of the Mississippi River and the eagles start thinking about migration.
