Penny's right.
'Smatter of fact, sent a private message regarding holdfasts last
night. Here, FWIW is part of it with links to images of both kinds.
-----
There are two kinds of hold fasts, more or less. Ivy and climbing
hydrangeas (including Schizophragma who is a close hydrangea
relative) have one kind that looks like little roots, but they aren't
roots in the sense that they can derive nourishment from their host.
The Parthenocissus bunch - including Boston Ivy (which is not an ivy)
and Virginia creeper have another that is like a little disk.
If you'd like to see the difference, I scanned both for my series on
vines a few months ago.

down - they're at the end of the article; have both types here, with
a real close-up of the Virginia creeper disk, which is rather
incredible.

Penny...can take quite a few years to bloom - at least mine did - but
don't give up on it as it will eventually do so.

Hi Kathy - the Hydrangea has little holdfasts. I have one which
climbs against a walled in deck It is now 4 years old and really
started to take off last summer. No blooms yet and not sure how long
it takes before they bloom. It receives only part sun - mid to late
afternoon. I like its deep green leaves, even without the blooms.
