Re: clematis

According to my handy clematis book, Jackmanii belong to group 3 - in
Feb/March, cut back all stems to just above the base of the previous
season's growth with in 75cm of soil level.

Nelly Moser is group 2 - Feb/March, cut back all stems to a strong
pair of buds.

(Above is for established plants. Treatment of newly planted vines
is somewhat different. i.e. 1st year you have Jackmanii, cut all
stems back to 30 cm, then continue as above in subsequent years. 1st
year you have Nelly, cut back all stems to 30 cm; 2nd year, cut back
all stems to 1m, 3rd and subsequent years proceed as above).

Can't find Violet Star Gazer in my book...but here's a web site on
clematis with pruning info. on all types - maybe you can recognize
the growth pattern.
