This has all been very interesting, learning about raccoons. Now I have to
tell another story, hope you folks will bear with me. Two years ago I went
to Bloomington Indiana to retrieve my son from a week long boy scout camp.
The boys were strictly forbidden to have any food what so ever in camp. My
son said a couple of raccoons would walk on him every night. Around one a.m.
I awoke to hear noises from the outside. The full moon revealed at least
twelve raccoons just walking around the ground, they were everywhere! The
tents that the boys were in were army style platform tents with full open
ends. No one was ever hurt by these critters but it gave me the creepies.
Glad my tent had a zipper flap!
As to the damaged roof, my family as well as several of the neighbors lost
shingles to the raccoons, they persisted in trying to find an opening to
enter the house. A new roof costs several thousand dollars. I have never
heard that raccoons are territorial, in OH the legalities are more involved
with transporting diseased animals. Distemper wiped out most of the raccoons
around here a few years ago but they have returned in full force, having no
natural predators.
