A Hundred Hostas

Some of you may remember last fall when I wrote and requested a source
for inexpensive root divisions of hosta. I have a very large,
problematic bank in shade and didn't want to just plant the whole thing
in ground cover.

Well - I ordered a "mixed bag" of hostas from Gilbert Wild and received
the box yesterday. To my surprise, the root divisions are HUGE. I went
into a panic, knowing that these divisions would not fit in my
collection of little quart pots. The package insert recommended
planting them immediately, or storing them in the crisper of the
fridge. There was no way a hundred roots were going to fit in my
lettuce drawer. So, I had a hundred huge roots looking me in the face
and not a clue what to put them in.

Much to my luck, I live in a town with a beverage container deposit
law. And I can't say I am really prompt about returning my bottles,
mainly leaving them in black trash bags in the garage. Two liter soda
bottles became my salvation. I simply cut off the tops, poked some
holes in the bottom for drainage, and I now have very deep pots to start
my hostas in. I ended up cutting 85 bottles, and having enough gallon
pots for the rest.
