Thank you to all who responded to my "sun or shade?" question. I do grow
mine now in sun with less leggy growth/flopping. I just wondered about the
"shade" comment that was made - thought maybe there was a new variety or
something.
For Bobbi: I am in zone 5 (northern KY just across the river from
Cincinnati). One year I failed to dig up my calla lilies before winter
set-in and I resigned myself to loosing them. However, they showed up in
the spring and the winter was one of our colder ones. Since then I have
been leaving my calla bulbs in (about 4 years) with continued success. They
are planted about 8-10" deep and I mulch the ground in the fall with
shredded leaves. For the first few years I thought they were not going to
come up but every year they show (they're late). I keep them heavily
watered throughout the summer as they are naturally a bog plant. The bulbs
are now about the size of a small grapefruit. They are not blooming as
prolifically as they did originally so I'm anxious to hear if there is any
advice on that.
