Callas and Agapanthus

Connie (and other inquiring about my callas):

The variety I have successfully wintered-over is the white-flowered with the
speckled green leaf. I think it is "Elliottiana" (am not sure I spelled it
correctly). I do water it well in summer but to answer Connie's question,
they do receive "good" drainage throughout the winter in that the area they
are in is not low and does not "hold" water. NOW, with that said - we had
some "hard" freezes earlier in the season for us than is usual this past
winter. Didn't mulch until a number of weeks after. So... I will let you
all know if I still have calla lilies.

Regarding agapanthus - I think they like being pot-bound. I've had 'Blue
Trumpeter' for YEARS with great foliage but NO blooms. I nurtured it, fed
it, repotted it, talked to it - nada. I bought 'Liliput' on a whim and it
bloomed prolifically after 1 year. It really was too big for the dinky pot
I had it in so I went to re-pot and the only soil left in the pot was the
little left on the surface. Almost the whole pot was roots! Shortly after
that I found an article that indicated being pot-bound was beneficial (or
was that 'clivia' -- ?).
