My response to Marge's very informative posting on this important issue
is only partially facetious, as it is something I have thought about a
great deal. When I see people being very militant for animal rights, I
think, "Where are the Plants Rights Activists?" If Fairy Shrimp and
other such creatures are held to be important for their own sake,
shouldnt plants be thought of in a similar way? I know, activists
usually want animals to be preserved where they are found, not moved to
other locations. But plants, by their very nature, seem to call out to
humans to spread them to new locations. I realize that plants can be
invasive, and interreact with other plants in negative ways. But the
tendency of humans to move plants around, swap them, cultivate them, and
value them is one of the more hopeful things which humans do. If we
lose that ability, I think mankind will be the worse for it. And I am
not sure that governments would be too great at "saving" plants either.
Gardners are much more likely to respond in a responsible way, without
being barred from making their own careful decisions.
