Re: importing plants from Canada into the U.S.

Dave,

You will need phyto certificates for any Hosta or other plants
brought in. They will have to be bare rooted and free from all soil.
They will need to have the correct botanical name for each plant.

You can contact APHIS for more information:

USDA-APHIS-PPQ
     Permit Unit
     4700 River Road, Unit 136
     Riverdale, MD 20737-1236
     Telephone (301) 734-8645
     Telefax (301) 734-5786

The following page on the APHIS site may be of interest and help you
figure out what you need to do.

AGRICULTURE PERMITS Canadian Plant Propagating Material
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ppq/permits/plantproducts/canadian.html

lists plants that may not be imported and conditions for entry of all
non-listed plants.

It used to be that someone coming back from the UK could bring 12
plants with them as long as they were bare root, without permits or
phytos. But, considering the USDA/APHIS crackdown on seed importing
(used to be you could bring in about any commercial packets of seed)
I do not know if this still applies nor whether it applied to Canada
in the first place. Get the impression there are somewhat different
rules in regard to Canada than the rest of the world.

Best you contact APHIS and get the word from the horse's mouth. Also
find out where your entry point is going to be and whether that is
staffed so that there won't be any hold up on your end. Entry points
make a difference, I understand.
