[SHADEGARDENS] Vinca

Friends,

I almost forgot to add to the Vinca minor discussion that Clyde began by
point out that the 1998 catalog of Fieldstone Gardens in Maine offers a
significant list of Vinca minor cultivars including those that are green
with different colored flowers, those that are variegated, those that
are gold, and those that get new summer foliage that is different in
color from the older foliage (sort of like some hostas). Having decided
that Vinca is my favorite ground cover under hostas (with Ajuga a close
second), I ordered one of each kind Fieldstone sells for this spring to
experiment with them and see which cultivars are the most interesting.

One of my favorite things about the plain green Vinca minor that has
naturalized all over Central New York is that when the leaves fall on it
in the autumn, it somehow ends up on top of the leaves by December and
still looks great.

Cheers,
