Claire, Clyde--and where are Susan and Tamara, who started all this?--I
suspect the problem with keeping Buddleia alive and happy in our area
(Southern Indiana, which is very different from Claire's mountaintop in
NY) is our hot, muggy summers. The Burnham Woods people grow them in an
island bed in the middle of a huge lawn, where they can get the breezes
from all sides and are not terribly crowded with other plants. I don't
have that kind of space... It's possible our severe (and usually wet)
winters may contribute to the problems and that mulch will help. I'll
check that out.
Now, as to Pieris japonica, mine does well on the east side of the house
where it gets almost no sun and insufficient water. It has grown very
slowly and after about 20 years is only 5 feet tall. It has a white
evergreen azalea on either side. Michael Dirr says it's one of the best
shrubs for the Midwest, and should be grown in moist soil in part shade.
He gives zone tolerance as 5-9, i believe, but if you could plant one on
the EAST SIDE of something, Claire, I bet you could grow it.
