Re: [SHADEGARDENS] Lillies
Journey's End is a glorious scented reddish/pink lily with white round
the edge. Huge blooms.
Strawberry Shortcake - short - strawberry coloured.
Do not remove stem growth means that stem rooting will occur. If you
see rooting above ground, cover it up. If I see this happening, I throw
a couple of shovels of mulch/compost/sand/earth - whatever I've got.
Wouldn't plant 6 inches deep really, unless you have bushy tailed rats
in your garden.
I plant my lilies about 2.5 times the size of the bulb, in a sand
sandwich. ie: sand in the bottom of the hole, lily, more sand. Sand is
to increase drainage and also slugs don't like it.
Main thing is: Never never let the bulbs come into contact with
manure. You can manure (old manure) for mulching the beds but don't
plant lilies in beds where you have dug in manure - unless it is 3 or 4
years old manure.
And shade gardens???? These need sun. Oh, just saw where you live.
Maybe the Carolinas are so hot you do need shade for them. I don't know
that.
Cheers Ginny in Victoria BC. Also Zone 8 but a cool rainforest zone 8
