Charles-There are personal variations on the technique. I will tell you what works for me. long fibre sphagnum moss (moist) sharp knife aluminum foil rooting hormone (optional) small paint brush Cut a girdle directly beneath a node. Cut about 1/2-3/4" of ring. Cut all the way around, and do so cleanly. Dust with hormone using a small brush. Dust lightly. Wrap a handful of the moist moss around the newly created wound. Squeeze out excess moisture, (1 good squeeze, cj) Wrap with aluminum foil to seal completely. Label the layer with variety name and date. Check back in 4 weeks. When roots have filled the foil sack, sever the new layer, below the alum. sack. Plant in container or in the ground. DO NOT remove moss from the cutting. Here in the Ga piedmont, layering may be done anytime growth is active, between bud swell and leafing is good, as is after petiols have hardend off. Do not attempt while petiols are soft. I have even done this technique in november here in lanna. Do not let the forming roots freeze up in the air. If attempting very late layers, cut before freeze and store in a cool house. They will leaf when they are ready. After they have flushed, they may be palnted out of in containers. This enough for you, son?? If not post me privately or post me anyway. Dont be intimidated by the process. After you've done a couple hundred, you can do them with one hand. harry l. abel 7a nawuth of the hooch
