Re: [SHADEGARDENS] Wrens & Slugs

Clyde, I suspect as for most woodland birds, the availability of "cover" in
close proximity to where you want them is the most important thing you can
provide. We're in woods, and I have noticed that all the "feeder birds"
seem to sit in branches to scout out the territory, then swoop down to
feed. Wrens like suet, which I get free from the meat dept. at the grocery
stores. (I get strange looks, since I use a TON of it, but they do continue
to give it away, or charge a minimal fee.) Wrens also adore nesting in old
flowerpots near/around my potting table, or in the garage shelves, or in
anything that I REALLY wish they wouldn't "park" in...(Are you SURE you
want them?) Dogs, cats, etc. don't seem to really bother them, aside from
provoking the shrill "scolding" I mentioned yesterday. They seem to
produce 3-4 broods a year here, and will use the same nest for the entire
season. I wish I could just box and send you some, but I hope you'll have
success. I suspect the MOST important factor is the answer to the
question: "are there already wrens in your vicinity?", as I think mine are
around here year-round. Good luck! (P.S. when do you want your
primulas??) Joann
