The problem that I have experienced with cages (other than badly cut
hands) is that the cages tend to heave out of the ground in a year or two;
they work their way out, while bulbs planted in a natural manner do not. I
shake my bulbs in a bag with some Thiram dust before planting and, althouth
I am sure that it wears off over the years, I have lost fewer bulbs to the
rodents with this method.
