Re: [SHADEGARDENS] Toad Lily

Toad lilies are becoming quite popular in catalogs with good reason. They
are beautiful in their own quiet way with very intricate bloom structure.
Blooms can range from white with spots to pure white and into purples,
lavenders and yellows. Size can range from 6 inches to 4 feet or more.
Foliage can be smooth or hairy, leaves long and lance shaped or short and
highly glossy. They can stand straight up or gracefully arch. Foliage color
can range from bright green to dull olive or a bright gold and there are
variegated selections. Different species and hybrids can be found to
produce blooms from June through the first hard frost. If you shade garden
then the Toad lily is a must.
The best culture is dig in a lot of leaf mold in chunks before
planting. The roots like to be well drained, but have access to moisture.
Especially during July, August and September. If the leaves are browning
you do not have adequate moisture.
