Hi, Ginny.  I grow herbaceous and one tree peony in part shade/part sun.
Here in the Midwest, a little afternoon sun helps when the temps. go over
90F for half the summer; it keeps the foliage from burning.  In the spring,
they need all the sun they can get, so mine are planted so as to take
advantage of bare trees which leaf out after spring and provide shade part
of the day.
