I do grow Pennisetum alopecuroides in zone 4 and have for several years. I
don't believe it would be tall enough to plant in the middle of an island
bed. I was thinking Miscanthus sinensis purpurascens would be good. The
foliage turns purplish in the fall, and the plumes have purplish tinges
until they fluff out. Then the color is beige, but the grass turns a rose
beige after frost. This rose beige color lasts all winter. This miscanthus
is about 4' tall and is very hardy here.
