Regarding the kids issue...I have two kids ages almost 7 and almost 4...I
was getting kind of annoyed at the little one for spraying the hose so
hard at the seedlings until I asked him to lay down on the grass with me
and take a really good look at the "babies' he was helping to feed. This
new perspective showed him how delicate this new life was and I didn't
have to remind him again after that >>
Hi Carmel,
I like your philosophy on kids. I have kids about your age too: 2, 6, and 8
this Sunday, oh, and my 15 yr old. There are many times when I just cringe
when they play very close to my plants... hoping they won't accidently step on
one. My kids all know about staying on paths...it's their friends that still
need to be taught <VBG> but I love having all the kids around. Only my 6 year
old is interested in gardening so far...but a couple days ago, my 8 year old,
Leah, asked if she could help me clean up leaves from one of the paths...my
first inclination was to say "no, she might wreck some tender new growth"
..but I reconsidered and thought I could sacrifice some new growth in order to
nurture her love of nature....she seemed pretty pleased with herself when she
was done but I still haven't gotten up the courage to see how she did ;-)

p.s. thanks to whoever offered the tip of cutting down tomatoe cages to
protect the plants on the edges of gardens...I think I'll try that one in the
areas most likely to get trampled!
