Re: [SG] chipmunks

you need to get a cat!!!!! at least for the chipmunks and rabbits - my
neighbor's cat - max - patrols the neighbprhood every day -- i don't have to
fence in my garden at all anymore -- of course, max just struts in front of
the door and window and my indoor cat - muschi - really is jealous and puts
up such a ruckus.......

Hi Jan,

I am overrun with both chipmunks and voles. I never heard of the former
bothering hostas. The latter are noted for it. However, neither species
has ever done any damage that I know of in my yard. The worst hosta
predators in my yard are rabbits. I've known them to give a mohawk haircut
to a whole planting of hostas, but usually they only eat 2/3 of a leaf
(always on my current favorite new hosta!) as I guess there are other
plants around they prefer the taste of. Anyway, if chipmunks are your
biggest problem I'd say you are safe in planting hostas. Try to obtain
large, well-established multiple-crown plants if possible, rather than
tender little new TC plants. Do you know any hosta collectors or
established nurseries who can help you out?
