Voles are small, mouse-like rodents with short ears and tails that live in
shallow burrows. They favor vegetable food and are particularly fond of
bulbs, rhizomes, and tubers. Moles are nearly eyeless, have no ears, and
have enormous front legs for digging. They are carnivorous and eat grubs
and earthworms; their shallow tunnels serve as pitfall traps for prey and
so are frequently renewed.
Voles often use abandoned mole tunnels, but would be attacked and probably
killed if they encountered a mole.
