Buried Soaker Hose

Hi.  I'm a newbie gardener and will be starting a large shade garden soon.
Planning for lots of hostas along with other compatible plants.  Was thinking
about installing a soaker hose below ground.....but I'm not certain this is
worthwhile.  Would it be better on top -- in future mulch?

Zone is 5, so we get winter freezes.  Area is directly under large trees and
will probably be 50 ft long and 20 feet wide, with a fairly serious downslope
towards the long side.

I'd really appreciate your comments.
