Thanks all. I think I'm going to try the Hydrangea arborescens as Roberta
suggested. I've already got 'Annabelle' in a somewhat sunny (for me--that
means 3-4 hours a day) spot, and it does really well. I'll just cross my
fingers that it will flower okay in deeper shade. I'm really not in love
with the way these plants look in the winter.
