Chris, I have a shade garden that sounds very similar to the one you will begin.  I have been burying soaker hoses for a few years and have had no problems with them surviving the winters here in the North (I live in Northern Illinois).  In fact the only problem has been rabbits biting into  them (the hoses can be fixed quickly with a hose mending kit).   Just remmber to disconnect the main hose from the soaker at the end of the season and to protect your outside faucets with some sort of cover.

Let me know if you have more questions.  I am actually thinking of burying soaker hose throughout my lawn as well.  I believe and I think my plant can testify to the fact that the soaker hose provides a much more even and better watering overall than above ground systems (less water evaporation and the water gets right to the roots).
