Hi, Silke:
Tree peony need sun, well drained slightly acidic soil, and water.
I'm planning on moving one this fall as well as take a few root cutting. Dig
your hole at least twice as wide as the root ball and as deep as it is
presently. I dig mine very deep; so that, I can back fill with lots of
compost and organic matter. I add bone meal, alfalfa meal, green sand, and a
small amount of cotton seed meal and dolomitic lime [for calcium and
magnesium]. Water well to settle the soil and bring the soil level to the
present peony's depth. Wait until the first frost or until the leaves drop.
Then it's safe to transplant. Water in well. After the ground freezes,
mulch about 2"-4" without covering the trunk(s).
happy gardening,
