The grasses should not have a problem with the Osmocote, they will tend to
grow fast when the temps are high-so they may out grow their container.
The fern question I cannot answer.
As a useless tid bit of information:
The virgin prairie soils were nutritional poor, especially in nitrogen. This
helped in keeping the grasses from over growing every thing. Making it
possible for a good mix of grass and orb species.
