Re: QUESTION <-> sprouting seed [Tricyrtis (Toad Lily) &Arisaema]

Haven't grown Tricyrtis from seed, however have had self-sowing and
have a feeling these need cold stratification. If Gene Bush is
reading, he probably knows all about this one and can help. But have
germinated a lot of Arisaema.

I soak the seed if it's dry - which I assume it is - for a day or so
in water with a drop of dishwashing liquid soap in it - change water
daily. This is not necessary with fresh seed. Fresh seed just needs
to be cleaned (wear rubber gloves as some people find it irritates
the skin) and planted immediately.

Sow them in pots on top of the medium and cover with a quarter inch
or so of granite grit. Have not found any Arisaema needing cold
stratification. Usually germinate in a month or so at room temps.
Arisaema-L has archives with a *lot* of seed sowing info. - as well
as other growing info. about the genus. Be a good thing to check out
post germination handling as you need to not disturb the baby tubers
for their first season - leave them in the seed pot. Never fertilize
with Ozmacote - kills Arisaema.

Check them out - join AEG and get on the list, if you're interested
in this marvelous genus...great list - not a huge amount of
consistent traffic...sometimes a lot and sometimes not; very
knowledgeable and nice people on the list.

URL to archives - with subscription info. -
