I too LOVE moss and we tend to get the soft, velvet-like variety. There are
a lot of little insects that take cover underneath so that is probably what
the bird were going for, especially if there was no snow. There is a
fluffier variety that I grow around my water garden that I've noticed the
birds come to get to build nests.  We have a lot of clay in our soil so it
takes a lot of work to get mosses established and thriving.
