When you prune back the branches, don't use a hedge clipper.  Use loppers
and/or pruning shears.  Prune some of the branches lower than others.  This
is a good time to get rid of branches that are not as strong or as healthy
as others.  Prune back some of the larger (taller) branches below others.
This will allow some growth inside which will give you a thicker shrub too.
