I know what you mean. Try Lythrum species. There are also some cultivars.
Also, tradescantias are often overlooked by the Shade Gardener. Also, Phlox
divaricata--it is bloom now in my garden and some have purple flowers, others
white and pink. It has a "wild" look, but I like that "look." If you don't
like the foliage, just cut it down after bloom---they'll be back!!
