Forrest, Sheila & Others,
The seeds maturing in the forest now are, for the most part, known as
ephemerals. The can be collected, but must not be allowed to dry out. If
they do they are most likely dead and will not germinate or will take years
to emerge. They must be planted as soon as possible and placed in
coldframes or some such in a shady area. Keep them moist but not wet and
allow them to winter over outside. They should germinate next spring in
many cases. In quite a few they will not germinate for another year after
that. If you do have to store them for a while place them between damp
paper towels and place in the refrigerator until you are ready to plant.
I am in the process of collecting ephemeral seeds now and will have them
on my web site by sometime the first of next week. I prefer to trade seeds
for others I am looking for or plants I am seeking, but they can be
purchased.
