Hi Lucinda:
There are many formulae for hypertufa troughs. The basic one is one part
potland, one part perlite, and one part peat moss. Add water until you
achieve a dough-like consistency. Press into whatever shape you please.
Place 1/2 - 3/4" drainage holes carefully into the bottom after about two
hours.
You can use a cardboard box lined with a garbage bag or use your imagination
to design whatever you wish. The walls as well as the bottom should be about
1-1/2" to 2" thick. After about 24 hrs. take your creation out of the "form".
You should keep it cool for about 7-10 days until the unit cures and dries.
There should be an empty thump like when bread is done.
I suggest a vinegar wash to lower the pH due to the lime in the cement.
As far as moss growing, I have asked the question too. Really no responses
yet. I think that you can brush buttermilk or plain yougart over the
hypertufa. In several weeks, moss should begin to grow. I think you can also
put moss into a blender along wth the buttermilk or yougart and apply the
same.
Hope this helps
